Kijiji means “village” in Swahili, Kijiji Nights present African storytelling, music and poetry, while depicting the spirit of an African village. Kijiji Nights involves a whole village of Pacific Northwest celebrated storytellers, poets, authors, musicians and orators.
Kijiji Nights engage the audience while helping them learn valuable lessons from an African village perspective. Budding teenage poets welcome guests, and lead them to the elder storyteller who walks them through captivating narrations.
Kijiji Nights feature One Vibe Africa’s videos, photo shoots, and merchandise.
The first Kijiji Night on September 3rd 2015 included performances by BlackStax, Yirim Seck, Sharon Williams, Nichelle Alderson, Adilia Scott, Infinite & Yesod, Leija Farr, Nana Kibibi Mone, and Kouyaté Arts.
Seattle Art Museum and One Vibe Africa USA are developing Kijiji Nights to an annual event as a platform for transforming communities through storytelling, poetry, music, and art.
