Omena Band

Cultural preservation is an important aspect of One Vibe’s work that is accomplished by involving Omena Band in One Vibe’s programs. Working with Omena Band creates an opportunity for children to learn how to sing in their native language, and master the technique of playing guitar traditionally. Omena Band consists of seven amazing elders and women. Every three months three of the band members travel to Kisumu to facilitate one-week workshops for students. The band has done this for the last year, and has signed up to do it again in 2014/2015.

One Vibe empowers youth, and accomplishes the same with its staff members and mentors like Omena Band. That is why One Vibe is releasing Omena Band’s mini-album, starting with “Omena” the single that we are sharing with you today. 50% of the proceeds from this song go towards sustainability of One Vibe’s work in Kenya and 50% goes to Omena Band as a source of revenue through their craft.

We also created an amazing music video for Omena, and you can watch it by clicking this link, http://youtu.be/uwFcVjwUqrY, or watch it below:

Omena means fingerlings in Luo the native language of the community that inhabits the region around Lake Victoria in Western Kenya where Omena Band is from. The song narrates the journey of “Omena,” from the time it’s caught by fishermen, how it travels through various cities in Kenya, and how it even travels to America and Europe. The song also describes the nutritional benefits of “Omena.”

If you are wondering why we are spending all the time promoting this group of elders. It’s because we love our culture, and agreed that in return for the time the elders are giving One Vibe’s students, we will help record their mini album and use the recording process as a practical learning opportunity for students. The song we just released was recorded with help from a studio in Nairobi and Kisumu. It took us over one year to produce this song because of technical glitches with the studios, and recording equipment.
